  • Annual checkups are preventive visits with your dedicated primary care physician (PCP). While you might need a routine exam to get help managing a chronic condition or to aim to prevent inherited ailments, it’s just as important to schedule annual evaluations if you’re generally healthy.

Annual checkups allow your physician to evaluate your overall health and look for early indicators of chronic diseases, such as a gradual increase of high blood pressure. But you might also need a visit with your PCP:

Before starting a new job, sporting activity, or school

To maintain your license for work or insurance

    Before surgery (preoperative evaluation)

Before traveling overseas, or after coming home from overseas

Your routine visits are your one-on-one time with your dedicated PCP, so you can discuss all of your medical concerns.

  • While your routine checkup at CareFirst Wellness Associates is tailored to your health and specific needs, in general, you can expect:

    Vaccination recommendations

    On-site blood testing or urinalysis

    Blood pressure check

    Oxygen level testing

    Medication updates

    Diagnostic ultrasound

    Electrocardiogram (EKG)

If you’re female, you might need a well-woman exam that can include a breast exam, pelvic exam, and Pap smear. If you’re male, your annual checkup could include a prostate or hernia exam.

  • The team at CareFirst Wellness Associates work together to ensure your annual checkup is comprehensive and includes all of the different tests you may need. If your checkup is mandatory, like for work or school, bring your necessary paperwork with you. It’s also helpful to:

Request copies of medical records from former primary care doctors

Make a list of all medications, including over-the-counter kinds

Write down all of your questions and concerns

Our providers enjoy getting to know patients individually. Because they’re probably going to want to know about your family health history, it’s also helpful to find out as much as you can, or if anyone in your immediate family has experienced any changes in their health.
